The Water Security and Climate Change Conference 2021 (WSCC2021) has been successfully convened by the Vietnam Academy of Water Resources (VAWR) on behalf of the Exceed network. The event was conducted from March 1 to March 4, 2021, in Hanoi, Vietnam through a virtual platform. The WSCC is an initiative of the ‘Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation – exceed’ program, which consists of more than 90 universities worldwide. The conference has been implemented since 2016 under the auspices of the Center for Natural Resources and Development (CNRD), the Sustainable Water Management in Developing Countries (SWINDON) network, the Food Security Center (FSC) as well as the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).

Prof. Mukand S. Babel from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand stated that the WSCC conferences have successfully been implemented in Thailand (2016), Germany (2017), Kenya (2018), and Mexico (2019). As, a member of the scientific committee Prof. Babel added that the WSCC conference 2021 aims at providing a platform for knowledge exchange, fostering dialogue and innovation, and starting new initiatives, collaborations, and projects. Furthermore, the event is an initiative to support the dialogue between the “water” and “climate change” communities, fostering nexus thinking and ultimately creating impact beyond the conference as such. I am particularly delighted to note that the idea conceived in the early 2016 of holding the international conferences on contemporary subjects of water security and climate change at AIT has grown so much as clearly indicated by 561 participants actively engaged in the online conference just concluded, he remarked at the Wrap-up and Closing session on 4th March 2021.

The Water Security and Climate Change Conference (WSCC) is an annual event where scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders from various sectors discuss the diverse facets of water security and its relation to climate variability and change. This year the conferences covers wide range of topics which included Urban Water Management; International Water Management; Water and Land for Agriculture and Food; Water Security Hazards and Risks; Connecting the Dots: Nexus Themes & Transformation Strategies; Water Security and Climate Change Adaptation; Water Knowledge and the Data Revolution. Prof. Babel chaired two sessions and participated in a roundtable on “Integration of Land and Water Governance to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Opportunities and Constraints”.
