Institute for Water Education (IHE), Delft and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in cooperation of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, The Netherlands organized a joint scientific workshop on “Estimation of the 21 st Century Runoff and Fluvial Sediment Supply for the Irrawaddy River Basin, Myanmar” at AIT Conference Center, AIT, Thailand on 17 February.
The major objectives of the joint workshop is to bring together academics and water professionals to discuss recent research findings on the reliability of globally available climate data products (present and future projections) for runoff and sediment yield estimation, and to assess the potential of the modelled data products for practical use in data-scarce basins with main focus in Irrawaddy basin, Myanmar.
Prof. Mukand S. Babel presented the expected outputs of the workshop, which is to achieve an improved understanding of the use of global datasets on hydrologic responses of ungauged basins, and develop a better understanding of the potential, practicality and appropriate framework for creating a common database to enhance hydrological research data sharing for planning and management of water resources in data-paucity river basins.
WEM faculty members, research staffs, doctoral and masters students also participated in the joint scientific workshop included with other participants who are scientists, academics, researchers and practitioners from key water-related organizations in Myanmar, Thailand and international organizations.
