In the WEM program, we faced the challenges of rigorous coursework that pushed my boundaries and expanded my knowledge. Long, sleepless nights completing assignments and studying for exams were frequent but enjoyable, thanks to the good company and support of my batch mates. Despite the exhaustion, these shared experiences fostered a sense of camaraderie and a deeper understanding of the subject matter. All in all, my time in the WEM program at AIT will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable periods in my life.

My external supervisor, Professor Sangam Shrestha from Water Engineering and Management (WEM), has been instrumental in guiding my research on modeling and forecasting seasonal fluctuations in river flow in the Lake Balkhash basin based on remote sensing. During my training at WEM, I had the best chance to gain knowledge from professors at AIT and made many friends. I am very thankful for the WEM team.

My academic journey in Water Engineering and Management (WEM) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) was a unique experience that equipped me with a strong foundation and invaluable skills. Besides the extensive curriculum focusing on Hydrology, Climate Change, and Hydraulics, I gained hands-on experience with Artificial Intelligence applications in water-related topics. This opened the door for me to work at the Hydro Informatics Institute as a Data Analyst. Moreover, the promotion of intellectual exchange, facilitated by WEM’s diverse culture, enriched multiple aspects of my personal development. Overall, these precious experiences fostered in WEM helped me successfully complete my PhD program at Tokyo Metropolitan University.

It was an enriching experience to be a part of the Water Engineering and Management Program at AIT. Independent research, coupled with cutting-edge courses, was the most transformative aspect of my academic journey. The challenging yet supportive environment, fostered by dedicated faculty, staff, and seniors, not only deepened my understanding of my field but also instilled in me the confidence to pursue advanced research. A highlight of this journey was publishing my research in a peer-reviewed journal, an invaluable learning experience that honed my research and writing skills. The critical thinking and problem-solving abilities I developed at AIT are directly aiding my success in tackling complex research questions and methodologies in my PhD program here at Colorado School of Mines.

Pursuing a master’s degree in water engineering and management at AIT, Thailand was a transformative journey. The program’s comprehensive curriculum, which included research work and covered advanced topics in hydrology, climate change, water resources management, and sustainable practices was indeed impactful. The faculty’s expertise and dedication were instrumental in enhancing my learning experience, while offering invaluable insights and guidance to tackle complex global water challenges. It helped to broaden my knowledge of water resources and their socio-economic and environmental impacts. This program not only equipped me with essential knowledge and research skills but also paved the way to continue my research as a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Calgary.

Enrolling in the Water Engineering and Management program at the Asian Institute of Technology for the January semester was a challenge as well as a privilege. Through determination and the unwavering assistance of the outstanding faculty, I overcame initial hurdles and thrived in this enriching environment. Applying artificial intelligence techniques to water resources engineering and management has been a remarkable experience that combines innovation with real-world applications. The advanced coursework, collaborative projects, and vibrant community have shaped me into a more skilled and adaptable professional. I am truly grateful for the transformative journey and lifelong connections I have made through this program.

My journey through the Water Engineering Management programme at AIT has been a transformative experience, equipping me with invaluable knowledge and skills that have paved the way for my professional and academic growth. The comprehensive curriculum, with its emphasis on subjects like water resource systems modeling, has proven to be an enduring asset in my career as a model developer at the Hydro Informatics Institute in Thailand. My master’s thesis on flood hazard mapping in the lower Ayeyarwaddy Delta, considering land cover change impacts, laid a solid foundation for my current doctoral research at the University of Bologna, Italy. I can say that WEM not only opened the door to my career as a model developer but also continues to support my academic aspirations.

Pursuing a master’s degree in Water Engineering and Management at AIT was a pivotal moment in my life. It provided me with a deep understanding of river engineering, climate change, and groundwater modelling. The supportive professors and enriching environment at WEM made me feel like my family, offering cutting-edge technology and fostering a diverse network. This education enabled me to secure PhD offers and a job as an Environmental Engineer. I am currently pursuing a PhD at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (since January 2022), focusing on riverbed sand mining and its environmental impacts across Southeast Asia. WEM was instrumental in shaping my academic and professional journey.

Joining the Water Engineering and Management (WEM) program at AIT was a life-changing experience for me, contributing significantly to my personal and professional growth. Interacting with outstanding water engineers from over 15 countries in one class sparked my curiosity and motivation to push my boundaries. The competitive environment at WEM instilled in me a passion for my career, driven by the inspiration I gained from my professors and seniors. Engaging in discussions and lectures about water, climate, and the environment deepened my love for this field, ultimately inspiring me to pursue a PhD and become a climate scientist.

The journey at Asian Institute of Technology and specifically at WEM laid a strong foundation for my academic career. Dedicated and experienced staff, high-level laboratory facilities, and a friendly multi-cultural environment are the main factors which I consider for the success of WEM. Prior to joining WEM as a master’s student I pursued a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from AIT. For my final year research project, I worked with Prof. Mukand S. Babel and Prof. Sangam Shrestha on a project related to “Analysis of climate trends in Myanmar”. During my master’s study, I received hands-on experience on several numerical models from several modules including “Watershed modeling” which has even helped with my PhD research today. I was also provided with an internship opportunity with an international organization while conducting my master’s research component. I consider the time I spent at WEM a turning point in my academic journey.

My two-year journey as a master’s student in the WEM program at AIT has been extraordinary. The prestigious WEM program equips graduates with essential knowledge and skills to elevate their careers. This is enhanced by world-renowned faculty, state-of-the-art research facilities, collaborations with esteemed institutions, and abundant opportunities for students. The exposure to diverse research projects has been invaluable in shaping my career path. The supportive community and rigorous academic environment of WEM deserve full credit for advancing the careers of its many successful alumni. I am proud to be part of this distinguished program.
