Dr. Perrine Hamel (Assistant Professor, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) along with her team including Dr. Erich Wolff (Research Fellow) and Ms. Hanna A. Rauf (Research Associate) visited WEM for the research collaboration with Dr. Ho Huu Loc (Assistant Professor, Water Engineering and Management) on 24th February 2023. Dr. Perrine is one of the prominent researchers in Singapore, appointed as one of the Principal Investigators of the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), one of the country’s five centers of excellence. More details and Dr Perrine’s work can be found at https://earthobservatory.sg/research/risk-and-society/resilient-and-liveable-cities-lab/ .

Dr. Perrine Hamel presented different research ideas being developed in her Resilient and Inclusive Cities Lab at NTU Singapore including the “Challenges and Opportunities of using Nature Based Solutions for water management in informal settlements at Bangkok, Thailand” and “Installment of sensors for monitoring Nature Based Solution measures for water management at AIT campus”. As a follow up activity, Ms. Ding Ning a Doctoral student in her lab will be installing those sensors for monitoring of different parameters including water levels and water quality etc. at different locations in AIT campus this year.

In the second part of the meeting, Dr. Loc discussed the ongoing research activities under his supervision in WEM. He conferred about the ecosystem modeling being performed by his PhD and Master students. The students are developing ecosystem models under the impact of climate change and land use change by utilizing INVEST model in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

In the end, Dr. Ho Huu Loc and Dr. Perrine Hamel exchanged gifts and extended sincere thanks to their research teams for the active discussion and providing their valuable input. Moreover, both sides have assured a mutual research collaboration between EOS (NTU) and WEM (AIT) in the future, such as exchanges of students and faculty between the two institutions.
