The Water Engineering and Management (WEM) program of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, along with its partners, kicks off its new project, “Ecosystem-based Adaptations for Sustainable Groundwater Resources Management in the Transboundary Cambodia-Viet Nam Mekong Delta Aquifer, Lower Mekong Region (GEBA)” virtually on 26 May 2022. The GEBA project’s study areas are Cambodia and Vietnam and will be jointly conducted by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand; Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), Cambodia; Can Tho University (CTU), Vietnam; Center for Creative Initiatives in Health and Population (CCIHP), Vietnam and Nextblue, the Netherlands.
The project is funded by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). The major objective of the kick-off meeting was to introduce the GEBA project and its activities and showcase the plans for implementing its activities. Dr. Ho Huu Loc, Assistant Professor, WEM/AIT, Prof. Sangam Shrestha, Professor, WEM/AIT, Dr. Mohana Sundaram Shanmugam, WEM/AIT and Dr. Manzul K. Hazarika, Director – Geoinformatics Centre (GIC) are leading the project from AIT. The project will address several key issues, including water insecurity related to the groundwater resources of the Transboundary Cambodia-Viet Nam Mekong Delta Aquifer, Lower Mekong Region. The project shall create the policy-relevant knowledge on transboundary groundwater, strengthen the capacities of local stakeholders and develop viable and policy-relevant recommendations.
